  C.10.3. Greenhouse Effect

What is it?

It is the warming of climate as the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Certain gases in the atmosphere resemble glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight to enter but blocking Earth's heat from escaping.

What are these gases?

The principal global warming pollutant is Carbon dioxide. Other gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include water vapour, methane, nitrous oxides, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

What are the consequences?

Enhancement of the ‘Greenhouse Effect’ could alter the global environment in dangerous ways, including:

▪ an increase in average temperature
▪ an increase of severity and frequency in heat waves, droughts, etc
▪ a rise in global sea level
▪ an increase in the range of disease-carrying insects and rodents

Who are the culprits?

1. Deforestation – Absence of growing trees to take up carbon dioxide in the air.

2. Burning fossil fuels – Results in production of excessive carbon dioxide

3. Harmful consumer products – Some products like hairspray and air-conditioning produces greenhouse gases like CFCs.
